Gen 01 || Chapter 01.002
Have you ever had a dream? Have you ever been told that your dream was ridiculous and unrealistic? Have you been told to give up on your dream and settle for goals that were more achievable? Then you know exactly what it was like to be me growing up.
I was the youngest of thirteen children growing up, and my family was dirt poor. As a little girl all I wanted to do was travel to space when I grew up. But as the poorest kid in school, everyone laughed at me. Being an astronaut was a rich person job. And as a poor kid, I had no hope of ever becoming one.
Of course, that just made me wanna be an astronaut even more. If only I could earn enough money to build my own rocket ship. But a rocket ship kit cost a lot of money, and building the rockets required even more money! And then you had to upgrade them to make them safer, which cost even more money! My family barely had §50 in our household funds after weekly bills. There was no way we could afford my dreams.
By the time I was a teen, I had almost given up on my dreams. Sure I’d daydream about being rich enough to afford to travel to space and still have money for a nice big house and lots of kids that could pursue their passions. But it didn’t seem like something that was truly achievable.
At least not until I discovered Trendi. Trendi was the hottest new thing in fashion. You could buy outfits at the thrift store and sell them for a lot of money on the app. Oh, those outfits were so stylish! I wanted clothes like that! But those prices! Oh, those PRICES! Who was willing to spend hundreds of simoleons for some ripped jeans, a hoodie, and some sneakers? People who could afford it, apparently. But it got me thinking. Exactly how much were people willing to pay for an outfit? I wanted to give it a try, but I just couldn’t afford to buy thrift clothes.
So when I received a call on my young adult birthday telling me a distant relative had left me an inheritance, I wasn’t about to turn it down. The inheritance wasn’t a lot, just §20,000. But it was enough for me to buy a bit of land in Sulani and have §1,800 leftover for thrifting.
The beach was cloudy and gloomy, but I didn’t really mind. If I could earn a bit of money thrifting, I could build a little hut to keep the rain off. Plus, the inheritance I’d received from my relative included a little SimRay they’d been working on. According to the letter it came with, the SimRay could turn money into almost anything. It could even build a house, apparently. If I could earn enough money, maybe §20k, I could test it out.
Luckily for me, there was a newly built thrift store in Sulani. I headed off to Mua Pel’am to see if I could buy a couple of outfits to sell.
It wasn’t too far from my new land, just a quick aqua-zip ride from the nearby beach, and I was there. The Thrift-N-Sip shop was on a little island, and it looked like a proper beach shop. At least what I imagined a proper beach shop to look like.
I stepped inside and made my way through the bubble tea shop to the thrift shop. There were several racks of clothes ready to be purchased.
There were so many options to pick from! I couldn’t just choose one outfit! I decided to take a chance and buy five. Even if I didn’t manage to sell all of them, I could always use more clothes myself. Particularly since I didn’t have very many myself. I put together a basics look, a streetwear look, a boho look, a polished look, and a preppy look. And it only cost me §585!
As I was listing the outfits on Trendi, I noticed something very interesting. There appeared to be no upper limit to the price I could set my outfits for. Most people set their outfits at reasonable prices, no more than a few hundred simoleons. But I wondered just how high I could set the price of my outfits. So I decided to test this out. I set the prices on each of my outfits at §1,051,397.
I didn’t really expect them to sell at that price. I wasn’t expecting a single sale, and I honestly expected the listings to all expire, and for me to have to relist them at a reasonable price. But to my shock, I got an alert on the Trendi app. Bob Pancakes wanted to buy my boho outfit. For that price?! And it had only been a few minutes! Not even half an hour had passed!
Honestly I was a little skeptical that this was a legitimate offer. It was probably a scam, right? But a little voice in the back of my head told me to send it to the buyer. So I headed back to my land and sent the outfit in the mail.
No. Plumming. Way. The next time I checked my bank account, I was a millionaire! I actually did it?! I actually sold an outfit for over one million simoleons?! Unbelievable! Amazing! Oh, sweet Watcher, if this was some kind of bug in the Trendi system, I hoped it would never be “fixed”! Now to build my house!
