Gen 01 || Chapter 01.002

Yesenia wasn’t sure what she had done in a past life to deserve the one she had presently, but it must’ve been pretty awful. She’d grown up in a toxic household with her deadbeat father who did absolutely nothing to take care of her and an older twin brother who their father treated as though he could do no wrong. Her mother had run away with some rich guy when she was just a child, abandoning her kids.

Yesenia had been counting the days to when she would become a Young Adult. She’d been planning on leaving immediately, and had even gotten a secret side gig making wooden carvings and selling them to save up for her own place. But a week before her birthday, she’d overheard her father and brother making plans to make her the household servant, cooking and cleaning for them for the rest of their lives. Yesenia couldn’t allow that to happen to her, so she’d secretly booked a ticket on a ship heading for Evergreen Harbor, and ran away.

Her birthday had happened nine days after the ship left the port, and oh boy, was it the worst birthday of her life. A storm started shortly after midnight, tossing the ship around on the waves for hours, and Yesenia feared that it would be wrecked. Her fears were realized shortly before sunrise, and the poor passengers on the ship scrambled for the lifeboats. But Yesenia was tossed overboard by the rough waves before she could reach the lifeboats…

She woke up to find herself on a tropical beach, miraculously alive and somehow unharmed. Yesenia groaned as she sat up.

“Ugh… where am I?”

The storm appeared to be mostly over, though it was still raining a bit. There were bits of ship wreckage all over the beach, some of which Yesenia wasn’t ever sure was from her ship. Take this strange suit of gold armor, for instance. What would something like that be doing on a cruise ship?

Well, she didn’t know where she was, but it certainly wasn’t Evergreen Harbor! It looked more like… Sulani? Was she in Sulani? It certainly seemed so! The white sandy beaches, the crystal blue ocean, the tropical plants. It had to be Sulani!

“Well, this is… interesting?” Yesenia said, tilting her head. “Might be better than going all the way to Evergreen Harbor. I mean, if they find out that I booked a ticket to that town, they’ll look for me there instead of here!”

She looked around a bit, then noticed something sticking out of the sand. Curious, she started to dig it out.

It was a plank of wood from the shipwreck! And as Yesenia looked around, she saw more bits of ship, just waiting to be collected. She began digging some more, uncovering even more treasures. Wooden planks, support beams, a camping shower, a lunchbox, even a bed! Why, with all of these scavenged resources, Yesenia could build a little shelter for herself to get out of the rain!

And so, she did. Using a rock as a hammer and a shell to pry up nails from the wood, she got to work and built a little dock on the water with a roof supported by the beams. All that time spent woodworking really came in handy!

It took the better part of the day to put together the shelter, and by the time Yesenia called it a day she really needed a toilet. She considered peeing in the sea, but then she saw a bush on the beach near her shelter. After a moment’s consideration, Yesenia decided to use the bush.

“Well, that wouldn’t normally be my first choice of bathroom,” Yesenia muttered, “But it did get the job done. Now I need to figure out some food.”

She checked the lunchbox, not really expecting to find anything good. But to her surprise, there was plenty of fresh (if a bit waterlogged) food packed into it! There were a few sandwiches, chips, and drinks in the lunchbox.

“Oh boy! Dinner!” Yesenia eagerly took out a ham and cheese sandwich and dug in. It was definitely salty from the sea water, but at least it was food.

“Well, that was something, at least,” she sighed as she finished her meal. “And now it’s getting pretty dark. I should probably get some sleep, huh?”

She climbed into the bed and closed her eyes. The bed was soggy, and it was difficult to sleep. But eventually exhaustion overcame discomfort, and Yesenia drifted off into a fitful slumber.

  1. Interesting. 🙂

    I’m curious, though, you never mentioned what challenge this was based on – if any?
